GST
Newsreel #5.
Another so soon, to catch up with myself having missed one and
also because of course this week we have….. drum roll… Educating Rita! Don’t forget to
come and see what I’m sure will be an excellent show. Tony has rather
brilliantly got us a piece in the Hendon and Finchley Times this week (I know
from experience how hard this is to achieve) and they’re using one of my
photos of Fran so I’m doubly pleased!

Playreading: The play is Arthur Miller's
1968 family drama 'The Price'
Venue:
Mulberry Court, East Finchley
This will be a
playreading with a difference. Anne Mansell, our host for the evening,
lives in a retirement home and she has enterprisingly arranged for the
reading to take place in the communal lounge. The other residents are
being invited. This means that the performance will be semi-public, in
a much bigger space than usual and with potentially a much larger
audience. Mulberry Court is at the corner of East Finchley High Road
and Bedford Road: go to the Bedford Road entrance. If you plan to
be there please email us.

Audition News
Although we were
successful in casting the main parts for this summer's production of `The
Recruiting Officer' following last week's audition, a number of smaller and
walk-on parts remain to be filled. A second audition for these parts only
will therefore be held at St Margaret's Church Hall, Victoria Avenue, London
N3 starting at 7.30pm on Sunday 11 April.
The main parts to be filled are those of Lucy (Melinda's maid), Rose (a
country wench), Bullock (Rose's brother), Appletree and Pearmain (rustics).
Audition pieces D, G and H, which can be found on the website, apply. Other
parts with lines include a Constable, a member of the mob and a couple of
servants. There are also opportunities for people who wish for non-speaking
roles, mostly as part of a mob. There is scope for doubling up and I hope to
use most of the actors in the smaller parts as stage crew to bring on tables,
chairs etc.
If you are interested, please turn up to the audition, even if it's for a
non-speaking role. If you are interested but cannot attend, please let either
John Colmans (Director) or Alicia Crisp (Production Assistant) know as soon
as possible. email us

Greetings to all GST
members and welcome to GST Newsreel #2 – with thanks to Hannah Arnaud, one of
our junior members, for coming up with the new name.
I’m
sure almost everyone saw or was involved with our very successful production
of The Three Musketeers over the last fortnight; we sold over 800
tickets, got some excellent publicity in the Ham & High, and generally
had a very enjoyable time.
During
last week the GST was performing and rehearsing three shows simultaneously – The
Three Musketeers in performance, Educating Rita in rehearsal, and
we have just started re-rehearsing Twelfth Night prior to taking it to
the Isle of Man at Easter. Some people also managed to fit in a visit to the
Hampstead Theatre where ex-junior member Tom Williams was performing with the
RSC in Dunsinane. An excellent production; unfortunately the run is
now ended but Tom thinks it may well transfer at some point in the future.
Coming
up in the next fortnight (8 – 22 March) we have the following:
Sunday 14 March – Audition for the
outdoor show – The Recruiting Officer.
Here’s a link to the
audition page on the GST website where you can view the available parts and
download audition pieces.
http://www.gardensuburbtheatre.org.uk/auditions.htm
As mentioned above, Twelfth Night and Educating
Rita are also in rehearsal, contact me or Ros Berg respectively for
times and venues if you’d like to come along and watch.
Coming
up in the next GST Newsreel – Rehearsed reading (House of Barnarda Alba)
on Sat 27 March, Pre-IOM performance of Twelfth Night on 31 March,
Laura Allen in Seussical the Musical at the artsdepot.

19 May 2009:
... in Social
News: This summer's Blanket Banquet is now confirmed for Sunday
26th July. Put it in your diaries now, and start practicing your cricket!
... in Audition News: The
audition notice for Our Country's Good
is now available on the Audition page.
...in Show news: A New Venture for GST. We are moving into the heartlands of Barnet with performances
of 'Our Country's Good' at the Old Bull Arts Centre after the
run at Henrietta Barnet School. This will be an exciting challenge for
designer, stage crew and actors to adapt from a large school hall to the more
intimate theatre with a thrust stage. The Old Bull is a community theatre and
we hope to attract new audiences for our shows.
...in Other News: Heading
to the Edinburgh Fringe this August. Members
of the GST are taking taking two plays to the Edinburgh Fringe and hope that
as many members as possible will make the journey north to support them.
If you haven't been to the Fringe before you don't know
what you're missing! Following the rehearsed play reading of "Time
Share", Terry Rogers has substantially re-written the piece which
is now going to be performed at the Edinburgh Fringe at the Sweet ECA,
Edinburgh College of Art.

For those who do not know the story, the plot is as
follows: " Foul whisperings are abroad. Malcolm discovers the apartment
next door is occupied by Macbeth, but no one believes him. What starts as a
relaxing holiday in the Spanish sun escalates into a bloody battle with the
neighbours from hell."
In this black comedy Malcolm and Simon work together and
one of them is in line for promotion in the family firm. Simon and his wife
Vicky have inherited a timeshare in Spain and invite Malcolm and his wife
Judy to join them for a holiday. The men anxiously wait to hear from their
boss Duncan who has got the top job. From the outset there is tension. News
that Duncan has disappeared is topped when Malcolm discovers they are living
next door to Macbeth and his wife. Gradually all four of them are inexorably
dragged in to the Shakespearean tragedy.
Will they be able to extricate themselves or will one of
them ending up having to kill Macbeth?
It previews from 6 - 8 August and runs until 31st
[except 18th]
And that's not all. John Colmans is joining
former members David Brown and Eugene Smith in "The
Wild Goose Chase" by John Fletcher.
Collaborations with Shakespeare aside (Two Noble
Kinsmen, Henry VIII) John Fletcher’s work is unjustly neglected. Here’s a
rare chance to see his 1621 battle of the sexes comedy. Virtually unperformed
for over 300 years, it shows that where men, women and commitment are
concerned, little has changed over the centuries.
The venue is the Quaker Meeting House and it runs from
August 17-29 (not 23).
Hopefully some members will make the journey north to
see both shows
