Note: The safety of performers, crew and audiences will always be paramount. Rehearsals will be conducted in accordance with the applicable government guidance. New restrictions may be introduced if cases of coronavirus begin to rise again.
The plays: Following the postponement of The Vortex we are staging a smaller scale show so as to be able to comply with social distancing requirements. We have chosen two one act plays by Brian Friel: The Yalta Game and Afterplay.
Each has a cast of one man and one woman and a simple set. In the first, based on a short story by Anton Chekhov, a man in his 40s (or thereabouts) and a young married woman in her 20s meet on holiday in Yalta; and in the second (also drawing on Chekhov) Uncle Vanya’s niece Sonya and the three sisters’ brother Andrey – both in their 40s – meet in a run-down Moscow cafe in the early 1920s.
We are alternating performances. If it is not possible to perform one of the plays, for example because of illness or isolation, the other play will take the slot. If it does not prove possible to stage any performance at Upstairs at The Gatehouse in November it is not the intention to include it in the Garden Suburb Theatre’s programme for 2021 although a studio production will be staged if possible.
As with all GST productions we cast without regard to race, colour, religion, national origin, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, or disability.
We will be rehearsing on two or three evenings on weekdays and on Sunday afternoons.
Weekday rehearsals will initially be on Tuesdays and Thursdays. There may be some on Wednesdays as well.
Rehearsals will be held at the Free Church Hall, Northway, NW11 from 8pm to 10.30pm on weekdays and 3pm to 6pm on Sundays.
Please note that though you do not have to join the GST to audition all actors in a GST show are required to be members.

The Yalta Game
Dmitry Dmitrich Gurov 39. Flippant on the surface, his romantic encounters provide an escape from the humdrum life of a bank accountant. The distinction between the real and the imaginary begins to blur as he enters on a life of deception.
Anna Sergeyevna 22. On holiday without her husband (a local government officer), she is accompanied by her (imaginary) dog. Her affair with Dmitri pulls her apart yet she clings to the notion that perpetual disappointment is a divine blessing.
Andrey Prozorov 40s. His life on his estate before the revolution is a distant memory. He earns his living from playing the violin in the street, but pretends he is in the orchestra at the opera. Shabby and disillusioned, his meeting with Sonya helps him to open up a little.
Sonya Serebriakova 40s. “She appears to be a controlled, determined and efficient woman”.
Her skill at running her uncle’s estate has come in useful. But the pain of losing her love (the doctor in Uncle Vanya) has not left her, and never will while she holds out hope of seeing him again.
