Based on the film of the same name, although it doesn’t follow it entirely religiously. It is an intriguing story of what happens if “death” turns up late to collect you when you are meant to die and the struggles to convince the “Universal Supreme Court of the Living and the Dead” to allow you to continue living for the sake of your love life. This version, originally created by Kneehigh Theatre for the National Theatre, has a lot of ensemble involvement with the main characters to perform the effects needed to make the show an exciting and lively production.

The audition will probably come from the excerpts below (or others) and feel free to improvise any of the songs. See below for links.

With regards to music and singing, I encourage anyone with any musical or singing ability to offer their services either as just a musician/singer, or an actor musician/singer. We do not have any written music that comes along with the rights of the show so we will be devising or finding our own so anyone who is interested in using their creative skills in this area would be very welcome. Composer or Musical Resource person.

I have indicated those parts that have “songs” written into their lines. However, this is not a musical so Recitative and/or Singing Over by others is what we will do if you don’t feel confident that you can sing solo. I will be auditioning acting not singing.

We will be rehearsing two weekday evenings (probably Monday and Wednesday) and Sunday afternoons from 20th September 2021. Final times and days will depend on the cast’s availability but at some point we will have to fix this and everyone will need to make themselves available for all or most of the rehearsals. All must be available for the full week of the show 22nd to 28th November 2021 because full involvement in the technical/dress rehearsals will be vital to the smooth running of the show.

My descriptions, (taken straight from the script) are not set in stone and especially as some of the play takes place in “another world” we are not constrained by any of our “real world” prejudices or to any stereotypical interpretations suggested. Please feel free to audition for any part you wish to regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, or any other enriching variable you wish to bring along.

If you have any questions about the show or this audition notice, please feel free to contact us on amolad@gardensuburbtheatre.org.uk. We should have a few copies available for reading for short loan (to give others a chance to read it).
